Music
Music is central to the creative life of the school. Weekly music lessons with a specialist music teacher, Mrs Gill, start from nursery and follow through into Reception and are a key part of our curriculum across EYFS. Music lessons are rooted in theory with a strong emphasis on performance. From nursery through to Year 6, music lessons are designed to nurture and challenge all our children to become accomplished young musicians, sharing their achievements through regular individual and group performances.
Each week, children participate in whole-school singing assemblies where they develop a range of voice and performance skills. Children will sing from an established repertoire and explore a broad and diverse range of songs and compositions that complement their wider creative curriculum. Read more about our music curriculum below.
Choir
Pupils aged 8-11 are invited. The choir rehearses weekly during term time with our specialist singing teacher, Mr Peacock. Singers enjoy a very broad repertoire of songs that culminated in several concerts across Oxford and a trip to Young Voices Concert at the O2 in London.
Ukelele
Each week children in Years 4 and 5 have a 40-minute ukelele lesson. by the end of Year 5, many children usually have their own instrument and have learned to play approximately 20-30 songs in ensemble or solo.
Rock Steady
We have weekly Rock band lessons and currently have 6 rock bands from Year 1 to Year 6. Children are taught in school time and in vertical bands (bands are formed of different age groups). all children over the year will learn to play, drums, guitar, keyboards or sing. There are 3 whole school performances, complete with a light show, that parents attend as part of a 400-strong audience. - If you are interested in your child taking part in Rock Steady, please speak to a receptionist at the main office.
Instrumental Lessons
In addition, we offer specialist one-to-one and group instrumental tuition in guitar, piano and violin. We have a highly experienced and dedicated team of peripatetic teachers who work with us to deliver music lessons in trumpet or piano. Our instrumental lessons occur during the school day and support children achieving recognised qualifications with The Associate Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM).
