Author Studies

Throughout Reception and years 1 and 2, children spend each term studying a different famous children's author, there are more than 100 books to be read. As a school, we provide children with various book titles by the chosen author for the term to take home on a Friday and read with a family member over the week. This purpose is to provide all children with the experience of a wide range of authors before they leave KS1. The authors we study are as follows:

Guided Reading

We love reading at CCSJ, and it is our mission to create a love of reading for every child, in every class, in every lesson. Guided reading sessions are whole-class sessions, delving deep into a wide range of complex texts from different genres, cultures and purposes.

All research shows that reading every day not only develops interests in all areas of learning, but creates more inquisitive and curious children, so the value of reading is obvious. We provide the best stories, poetry and non-fiction to challenge and develop your child's thinking to be critical of what they read and to read between the lines and examine the author's choice of language and context. Here are the books we cover in years 1 to 6 - Your child will read more than 70 books read in guided reading sessions.

Phonics

Reading starts at the very beginning, from enjoying stories together and then learning to read independently. We use Rocket Phonics, a systematic synthetic phonics scheme, to develop children's reading ability right from the start. You can find out more about this on the phonics page, here.
